The Human Element of Management
Professor Cary Cooper CBE was one of several speakers at the International Stress Management Association's UK conference in June to highlight the lack of "people management" skills, and how this contributes to workplace stress. Even graduates of respected business schools may aquire knowledge of how to manage budgets, manage marketing, manage facilities, but lack the skills to get the most out of people.
Without the appropriate skills they may find themselves behaving in ways which are counter-productive to achieving the best performance from their teams, and which may in fact lead to increased turnover and sickness absence.
Appropriate training can help leaders and managers understand their role, and the impact of their behaviour. Example of solutions we have offered in the past include:
- Leadership styles
- raising awareness of how different approaches are needed in different situations
- Delegation
- managers often increase the pressure on themselves by not delegating, or delegating ineffectively. Clear guidance and a model to follow can help to ensure that delegation becomes a meaningful investment in team members
- Appraisal and performance management
- appraisal should be a positive experience, not a chore! Managers can learn how to approach the process in a positive and meaningful way, motivating staff and enhancing their capabilities
- Coaching and supporting learning
- linked closely to appraisal and delegation, managers can learn how to recognise the many and varied learning opportunities in the workplace. Understanding the learning process, preferred learning styles, and suitable interventions can help them to accelerate the development of team members and build confidence and motivation.
